During the anti-terrorist operation in Cyprus, eight people of Syrian origin were arrested on suspicion of financing a terrorist organization. Police spokesman Christos Andreu said this.
Arrests were made based on information received. Seven men and one woman living in Limassol and Paphos were detained.
“These individuals are alleged to have received funds and used them to finance a terrorist organization based in a third country,” Andreu said.
Police are investigating crimes involving conspiracy to commit a serious crime, participation in a criminal organization and violation of anti-terrorism laws. At the same time, according to Andreu, there is no information about the preparation of a terrorist attack on the territory of Cyprus - we are talking exclusively about financing a foreign terrorist organization.
The detainees have already been taken to the Nicosia District Court to obtain a detention order. Five of them lived in Limassol, three in Paphos. They are believed to be associated with a terrorist organization operating in Syria.
The case is being investigated by the Crime Branch (TAE) headquarters.
