Despite the constant efforts of volunteers and authorities, the number of homeless animals is growing in Cyprus.
This was announced on Friday, April 4, the Anthony Theodosyu, an authorized manner for environmental and protection of animals as part of World Homeless animals.
“Responsibility for the well -being of animals lies with all of us,” said Theodosu.
She indicated the lack of infrastructure, limited resources, improper fulfillment of legislation and indifference or ignorance of a number of people. Theodosu called the public to actively participate in solving this problem. In particular, they suggested taking pets from shelters, and not buy them from breeders.
She also emphasized the importance of donations and volunteer work with animal protection organizations, adding that children need to instill a sense of respect for animals from a very young age. The commissar said that the owners of pets are responsible for the correct education of their dogs and cats "as a simple act of respect for everyone."
Theodosiu condemned any forms of abbreviation of animals, urging the public to report such incidents if they became witnesses, and stated that her office continues to work to create temporary institutions to care for animals and develop strategies to combat animal abandonment.
Theodosu indicated the need to “change the way of thinking and strengthen the culture of animal protection”, adding that it maintains contact with organizations, shelters and individuals to develop targeted proposals for protecting animals, regardless of whether they are in houses or on the street.
Meanwhile, the animal party turned to the public, saying that since 2023, it unsuccessfully requested an official meeting with President Nicos Khristodulidis and that political parties such as Disy, Akel and Green, as well as a deputy of the European Parliament Fidias Panayota are faced with similar problems.
“The president of the republic has an institutional duty to listen to political parties and their leaders and respect them,” the party added.
