Near the pig farm in the area of the village of Meniko the other day, dozens of carcasses of dead pigs were discovered. According to preliminary data, their number exceeds 40 pieces. Local authorities promptly reported the find to the corresponding authorities, which have already conducted an audit.
The head of the Meniko community Andreas Kagologir noted that in addition to the abandoned carcasses, a wastewater leak causing an unpleasant odor was recorded on the farm. He emphasized: “The carcasses had to be disposed of properly, and not just thrown away. This is unacceptable. "
The Minister of Agriculture Maria Panayota said that she personally controls the investigation in order to establish the reasons for what happened and hold the perpetrators liable.
Meanwhile, on Friday, January 21, the director of the State Veterinary Service of Christodulos Pipis said that the company, which, as established, dropped the dead pigs near the village of Meniko in the Nicosia region, received an order to remove them.
He added when veterinary services learned about the incident, employees of services and the environmental department went to the place to conduct an investigation and found dead pigs.
“This is a violation of the legislation regarding the obligation of the person responsible for the livestock farm to ensure the proper disposal of animal products, including animal carcasses and animal waste, from its territory in accordance with the established rules,” he said.
He added that the company that threw pigs “has a contract with the state and is engaged in the collection of animal waste”, and that veterinary services called this company so that it removes them.
“The company with an excavator with a retractable arrow went there to dig up the remaining carcasses that were covered with the ground, and transfer them to their territory so that they could properly treat them, as provided for by the legislation of the European Union,” he said.
When asked how long the dead pigs were there, he replied that the employees of the Environmental Protection Department visited this area 20 days ago and did not find any dead pigs, which means that pigs were thrown over the past 20 days.
“This indicates that the animals did not die from any disease, and the number of corpses will not grow. At the same time, the leadership of the object, instead of dealing with this, as it should be according to the law, decided to continue illegal actions, ”he said.
Given this, he stated that the government would take a fee from the company's management for the export of dead pigs, and further legal actions, including fines and possible trials, will be taken after consultations with the Environmental Protection Department.
