An extremely small amount of precipitation, quotation and fever prompted the fire service experts of the British bases to warn the public about the risk of fires in anticipation of the peak of the summer season.
Since the beginning of May, up to two fires per day have been recorded on the island, and this number will probably increase as temperature rises. Speaking this week, Aristos Aristide, an officer in the preparation of the Fire Service of Cyprus, explained how unstable the current situation is.
“At present, the land is extremely dry due to a combination of high temperatures and a significantly lower level of precipitation. This long drought led to extremely low water reserves and the level of dams, and these conditions increased the risk of fires. ”
However, despite the difficult conditions, Aristide stated that a large preparatory work has already been done, the culmination of which was the exercises in the Republic of Cyprus, held in May.
“Pyrsos exercises have turned out to be an important element in the preparation of the Air Force Fire Service for the challenges of the upcoming hot season. These large-scale exercises were attended by many departments, including all the ground and air fire extinguishing forces of the Republic of Cyprus, and they demonstrated a high level of operational compatibility and operational readiness of all emergency rescue services. The coordinated actions of the air and ground units demonstrated a strong, united front against potential threats of the fire. ”
It is important to note that the exercises also provided an excellent opportunity for the BB Chinook helicopter to take part in training with our Cypriot colleagues, which allowed to improve interaction, improve general procedures and ensure uninterrupted integration into potential fire scenarios in difficult summer months.
The head of the Air Force fire department also emphasized the importance of public cooperation on the eve of the fire hazard season to reduce the load on emergency rescue services. He explained that taking simple measures will prevent a large number of fires.
“The population should take additional precautions to prevent fires and ensure safety. Avoid the use of any equipment in the open air that can cause sparks, never throw cigarette butts to the ground or from car windows, as well as avoid open fire, for example, inciting bonfires or using fireworks. Remove dry leaves, dead plants and other flammable materials from the territory. Create a safe space around the house, cutting down trees and shrubs. ”
It is expected that the risk of fire will remain high until the temperature begins to fall by the end of September. Aristida completed his speech with a simple advice.
“If you see a fire, call 112 number, do not wait until others do it. We prefer to get 100 calls than not a single one. ”
