On Sunday afternoon, November 9, an incident occurred in the Larnaca area that surprised even experienced rescuers.
EMAK (Emergency Response Unit) officers were called to the village of Alitriko, where a horse was stuck in a drainage drain. According to the fire service, the call was received around 3 p.m. and crews quickly arrived at the scene.
The animal got stuck in such a way that part of its body was inside the concrete drain. To free the horse, rescuers had to use special cattle extrication equipment, including winches and hydraulic lifts. After several hours of intense work, the horse was safely freed. Fortunately, the animal did not suffer serious injuries and was released to its owner after being examined by a veterinarian.
It remains a mystery how exactly the horse got into the trap. According to preliminary data, she could have tripped or slipped while driving along the side of the road. Some eyewitnesses suggest that the animal was frightened by the loud sound and accidentally fell into the drain.
Fire officials noted that incidents involving animals are becoming more common, especially in rural areas. In recent months alone, EMAK rescuers have repeatedly freed pets, cows and donkeys trapped in pits and drains.
