More than 250 attacks on police officers per year are recorded in Cyprus

According to official figures, more than 250 cases of attacks on police officers are registered annually in the country, many of which reach court.

In just five days in the end of August this year, six such incidents were recorded.

In 2023, the police registered 274 cases of attacks and resistance to arrest, in 2024 their number increased to 288, and by July 31, 2025-already 147.

The Minister of Justice Marios Harziotis, responding to the request of the independent deputy Alexandra Attalides, noted that more than 100 cases are transferred to court annually. So, in 2019, 135 people were involved in these articles, in 2020-142, in 2021-123, in 2022-132, in 2023-150 and in 2024-148.

The issue of increasing the number of attacks on law enforcement officials is regularly raised by police trade unions. The ISOTITA union again drew attention to the problem after a series of incidents that occurred from August 20 to 25.

Among the latest cases - the collision of a suspect on a stolen motorcycle on a policeman, as a result of which he received an injury to the wrist; a strike of a foreigner with a foot in the face of a police officer who was carried on a stretcher; as well as a collision with a police officer. In total, six attacks have been recorded over these days.

Separately, the police celebrate the surge of attacks on December 13 - on the International Fighting Police, known as ACAB Day.
