Clashes between AEL fans and police before the match with Apollon forced Cypriot authorities to cancel the game.
The incident began when AEL fans became aggressive and refused checks by spraying paint on police officers. Police also found a bag of Molotov cocktails and torches. For these reasons, the authorities decided to cancel the match. After the game was cancelled, fans began throwing stones and Molotov cocktails at the police, to which they responded by using an Aiantas water cannon. Three police officers were injured.
Police chief Stelios Papatheodorou condemned the fans' behavior and stressed that the match was canceled because security at the stadium could not be guaranteed.
Riots following the cancellation of the match between Apollo and AEL at the Alpha Mega Stadium in Limassol left one police officer seriously injured by a naval missile and two others suffering minor injuries. According to police, the incidents occurred despite repeated warnings about possible risks and measures that were supposed to prevent such events.
Yesterday police were able to arrest four people in connection with incidents following the cancellation of a football match. Among the detainees are two 17-year-olds, one 18-year-old and one 21-year-old, all of them residents of Limassol. The young people tried to escape in a car, but were detained by police. During a search of the car, a metal bat was found, and three of them were wearing masks. All of them were arrested for obvious offenses and taken to the Limassol police station. By court decision, they were re-arrested and placed in custody.
