On Saturday, April 5, the Cyprus police turned to the public with a warning about a new wave of fraudulent messages sent to lure money and personal data under the pretext of paying fines for allegedly committed violations of traffic rules.
SMS messages were massively sent throughout the island. The recipients were invited to follow the attached link and pay for a “fine” in the amount of 50 euros. The message also mentioned the possibility of payment through the local police station or the specified bank, and in the event of untimely payment, an increase in the amount of the fine was mentioned.
To give reliability, scammers used the police logos and the JCC payment platform on the fake site to which the link led. However, all this is a trick aimed at the theft of personal and financial information.
The police emphasized that official notifications of fines or other offenses are not sent through such messages. Any suspicious SMS or emails should be immediately removed without crossing the links and without introducing personal data.
“Our goal is to protect citizens from financial losses and violations of confidentiality. The police transmits all the information not regarding court cases through official channels, ”the appeal says.
