The number of primary and secondary all-day schools will increase by 30% and 40%, respectively, in the new school year. This was announced by the Minister of Education Athena Mikhailidou.
On September 2, educational institutions across the country opened to prepare for the start of the new school year. In secondary schools it starts on September 6, and in primary schools on September 9.
According to Mikhailidou, the department has set itself the goal of making schools more inclusive and improving the quality of education. The Ministry intends to combat delinquency and violence by introducing preventive measures from an early age. “We have announced a national strategy to tackle violence and crime. Particular attention is paid to preschool education. We are implementing a pilot program of alternative education for children with extreme delinquent behavior,” the minister said. The program will be launched as a pilot in Nicosia.
More after-school schools will open this year. Investments in them are important from both social and educational points of view, the minister believes.
In the new school year, additions to the curriculum include lessons on financial literacy at the secondary school level and career guidance in primary schools. Psychological counseling services will also be provided in primary educational institutions.
At the same time, the Ministry of Education needs to improve methods for assessing student performance. It is necessary to involve them in projects, creative and group assignments, rather than relying solely on test results.
Particular attention will be paid to teaching Greek to children from Cypriot families. Surveys by the Ministry of Education have shown that schools are not able to teach children (we are talking about native speakers) to adequately understand text and have competent oral speech skills. These areas will now receive special attention.
Athena Mikhailidou said that schools are moving towards digitalization in areas such as student registration and compiling a digital dossier for each student.

Only at the very beginning of the school year did they begin to conclude contracts for the installation of air conditioners in schools, which was discussed back in June. The Ministry of Education believes that by the school year they will have time to equip 50 schools throughout Cyprus.
