Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain and Malta drafted a joint front to strengthen returns and preventing illegal immigration. At the Summit of the Ministers of Migration and Interior of the Med5, the implementation of the new European Pact on Migration and Asylum, the external dimension of immigration policy, and the crucial issue of returns was put into the meeting.
The Deputy Minister of Migration, Nikolas Ioannidis, underlined Cyprus' full support in the joint statement adopted by the ministers.
Cyprus, he noted, is already in line with national law, upgrades operating capacity and invests in infrastructure with the support of the European Union.
He added that upgrading of existing centers and the construction of new facilities reflect Cyprus' determination to maintain a human and effective asylum system.
However, he noted that continuous efforts, adequate funding of the European Union and other forms of solidarity are necessary.
He also stressed that cooperation between countries of origin and transit should be based on the mutual benefit, accountability and respect for human rights.
