China cancels visas for Cypriot citizens

The Chinese government has decided to cancel visas for citizens of the Republic of Cyprus. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reported this to President Nikos Christodoulides during their meeting at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Government spokesman Konstantinos Letimbiotis said President Christodoulides held a bilateral meeting with the Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China, during which "excellent bilateral relations" were discussed. During this discussion, China's Foreign Minister announced that as a "practical proof of strengthening bilateral ties," China will abolish visas for Cypriot citizens entering the country.

The President of Cyprus and the Chinese Foreign Minister also welcomed the interstate air services agreement signed on September 26, which will open direct flights between Cyprus and China.

More information coming soon

President Christodoulides briefed Wang Yi on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus settlement, the efforts made to resume negotiations, and his recent meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Details and the start date of the visa-free regime will be announced later.

The text was prepared based on materials from the publications “Politis” and “Philelefteros”

By the way:

The foundations for the agreement were laid in 2019. The draft agreement between the two countries was signed during the visit of President Nicos Anastasiades to Beijing. For more details, see our article “The start of air traffic with China lacks a signature.”
