Swimming and hammer throwing became disciplines in which athletes from the island showed excellent results.
Paralympic athlete Carolina Pelendritu won silver in the 50m freestyle at the Paris Paralympic Games. She competes in the S11 category, that is, for completely blind athletes.
38-year-old Pelendritu finished with a result of 29.82 seconds, losing to China's Ma Jia (28.96 seconds). This is Pelendritu's seventh Paralympic medal. At previous games, she won three golds, one silver and two bronzes.
The President's Office issued an official congratulations to the athlete. It said Carolina Pelendritu "once again makes us proud of her strength, athletic skills and steely will that led her to the enormous success of winning a Paralympic silver medal." “Carolina’s great success does honor to Cypriot sports, bringing it to a high level of the world sports arena,” the congratulations say.
Meanwhile, Cyprus also excelled at the 20th World Junior Championships in Athletics. Joseph Kesidis won gold in the men's hammer throw. The result of 81.53 meters became a new world record for juniors and the tenth best result in the hammer throw among athletes of all ages. And Valentina Savva won the silver medal in the women's hammer throw with a score of 67.21 meters.
Representatives from 134 countries took part in the competition, held in the capital of Peru, Lima. Cyprus finished 11th in the overall medal standings.
