Cyprus in horror because of the death of a large family in a fire

A family of five people died as a result of a fire that swept their house in Limassol on Saturday morning, February 15. Relatives talked with horror about how they tried to help, but could not.

The authorities were notified of the fire shortly after 4:00 in the morning, and by 4:08 in the morning there were already four fire engines at the place of fire. By that time, the house on the second floor was covered by a flame.

The remains of all five family members were found after extinguishing the fire. These were the father of 35 years old, the mother of 32 years and their children of seven, three and two years. The house was connected by a staircase with the lower floor, where other family members lived.

The authorities found bodies in the bedrooms of children and believe that parents tried to help them. Given that they were not able to leave the bedrooms, experts believe that they could lose consciousness due to fumes.

A relative said that he felt the smell of fire and knocked on the door, but no one opened. He broke the glass balcony door, trying to go inside, but the flame prevented him from doing this.

“I could not see anything, everything was filled with smoke,” he said.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been set, but one of the possible versions is a short circuit in the living room.

“They had a heater, safe, with a glass front panel. A week ago they had a different, quartz heater, but they got rid of it. They bought a model that is supposed to be safer, ”said the relative.

The authorities believe that the most likely script is that the heater was left included in the living room to maintain heat in the house, which led to the fire, which blocked the main exit - the ladder leading down.

The representative of the fire service Andreas Kettis said that the house was built partially from wood, brickwork and drywall.

“When we arrived, the fire in the house spread throughout all rooms. Our employees immediately began extinguishing the fire, ”he said.

The head of the criminal investigation department Limassol Lefteris Kiriac said that after receiving a message about the fire, “the police patrol arrived and tried to enter the house.

“However, due to the scale of the fire, they could not approach. A fire brigade arrived at the scene, which extinguished the flame. After that, police officers arrived at the scene and found the body of five people on the second floor of the house: a married couple and three children. ”
