The volume of domestic garbage in Cyprus is growing, and most of it is still sent to landfills. While Europe strives for processing, on the island the situation as a whole remains at the same level.
Cyprus ranks fifth in the European Union in terms of municipal solid waste per capita. 76.8% of these waste falls on landfills. The data is given by the statistical service of Cyprus.
In 2023, the number of household waste per capita reached 653 kg. The average volume of municipal waste per inhabitant in the European Union in 2023 was 511 kg. The highest indicator was recorded in Austria - 803 kg per person (2022 data). The following were Denmark (802 kg), Luxembourg (712 kg) and Belgium (689 kg).
The total number of waste in Cyprus in 2023 was 625,000 tons, which is 10,000 more than a year earlier. From this volume, 496,000 tons of garbage was received in the waste management system: 76.8% - were taken to landfills, 16.3% - processed, 3.7% - composted, 3.2% used for energy recovery.
