Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides on Monday, December 23, appointed a special representative for religious freedoms and the protection of minorities in the Middle East.
Thessaly Salina Chambos will take on the role and will "work to protect Christian and other minorities through dialogue with states in the region," government spokesman Konstantinos Letimbiotis said.
The aim of the Cyprus Special Representative will be to strengthen the rights of religious minorities and promote sustainable solutions to the problems they face.
Its mission will contribute to EU efforts to support religious groups in the region.
Chambos will also promote “multilateral dialogue and interreligious meetings to increase the participation of Christian minorities in the region’s political processes.”
Letimbiotis said her role includes facilitating humanitarian and development assistance to religious minorities, focusing on projects in health, education and the reintegration of victims.
The protection of cultural heritage will also be a key priority, with efforts to restore and protect religious and cultural sites strengthened.
Chambos' appointment underscores "Cyprus' commitment to supporting religious communities in the Middle East, promoting regional stability and showcasing the richness of the region's cultural and religious heritage," the spokesman said.
