Cyprus criminalized children's pornography created using artificial intelligence

The law on the criminalization of children's pornography created with the help of artificial intelligence was unanimously adopted by the Cyprus parliament on Thursday April 10.

Cyprus became the first country in the European Union, which adopted a similar law. Violation of the new law entails a punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to 15 years.

The author of the bill, a deputy from the Akel, Christophydes, emphasized that Cyprus was ahead of the rest of the EU, who is only developing a pan -European directive on this topic. According to him, the country was one of the first in the world, having joined states such as South Korea, Canada and twenty US states. In the UK, the discussion of similar measures began only in February of this year.

“The Cyprus parliament raised the defense, criminalizing the rapidly growing global disaster and gave law enforcement agencies the necessary instruments. This law will put an end to the production of such materials using AI, ”said Christophydes.

The adopted law expands the definition of children's pornography, including materials created using artificial intelligence software. Now, not only the production, storage and distribution of such materials, but also the possession of the AI instructions that teach such a content, has become illegal.

Of particular concern is that modern technologies allow you to create extremely realistic images: programs can “undress” real photos, replace the faces of children and even synthesize their voices, which leads to a second visity of innocent victims.

Christofides noted that the availability of such content enhances the tendency of pedophiles, normalizes the ideas of sexual violence against children and can contribute to the commission of real crimes.

“This creates a digital vacuum where violence against children seems to be permissible fantasy, which sharply increases the volume of content produced and seriously complicates the struggle with this phenomenon,” the deputy added.

According to Christophydes, annually more than 300 million children around the world become victims of the production of sexual violence using AI.

The bill was adopted unanimously. At the meeting of the parliament, Christophyde himself was present, emphasizing the importance of this decision to protect children in Cyprus and all over the world.
