The Cypriot government has revoked the citizenship of at least 86 foreign nationals who obtained passports through an investment program that is no longer in effect.
The newspaper Politis published a list containing the names of those who lost their citizenship, as well as the names of law firms and other service providers involved in the application process.
There are 77 names on the published list, but, as the newspaper clarified, nine more cases of annulment, recently approved by the cabinet, were not included in this list. This brings the total number of revoked citizenships to 86.
Most of the canceled passports belong to Russian citizens, but Chinese, Arabic and Middle Eastern names also appear on the list.
According to the law, revocation of citizenship can be caused by three main reasons:
Providing false or misleading information when submitting an application. Having a criminal record. Failure to comply with the conditions of naturalization.
Individuals whose passports are revoked are notified and have the right to appeal. A special committee reviews the appeal and then passes the final decision to the cabinet.
