Over the next years, Paphos has been waiting for large -scale changes. The authorities will develop public transport and movement on bicycles, undertake to solve the problem of spontaneous parking lots, as well as restore historical areas in the city center.
The city where the car is being refined for everyone
Large -scale changes are said in terms of effective urban mobility (Swak) of Paphos. Its main goal is to improve the availability of different parts of the municipality, improving the quality of life, a balanced and integrated development of all types of transport. The authorities decided to act according to a rather ambitious scenario, which contains a new approach to public transportation and parking space, the creation of a bicycle infrastructure, as well as the development of pedestrian movement.
In pathos, as elsewhere in Cyprus, the car remains a priority means of movement. If the buses, including school, account for only 5%of trips, 2%to the bicycle, and 6%for hiking, then 85%to the car. 1000 inhabitants account for about 600-700 cars. 72.2% of the inhabitants of the pathos themselves are driving, and 15.1% use as passengers. 60% of residents ride somewhere by car more than four times a week. Most of the trips (53.8%) occurs in the municipality of Western pathos, 10.1% in herooskipa. Important directions for residents of the city remain Chloraca (6.2%), Payia (5.3%) and Emba (4.4%).
The main problems of pathos
The construction of new roads and highways does not solve the problems that stem due to too active the use of personal cars. For example, spontaneous parking remains a serious problem, which greatly complicates the passage of other cars and interferes with pedestrians. It is difficult to deal with this phenomenon due to insufficient patrolling roads by the police. In the municipality, there is also a shortage of pedestrian crossings, especially in the area of schools. The sidewalks in the city are often narrow and uncomfortable, because of which many pedestrians have to go along the roadway. There are practically no bike paths in the center of Paphos.
The upcoming changes
All these problems should solve a new plan for effective urban mobility for pathos. It provides for: - the new road infrastructure, namely the construction of new avenues, bypass roads, intersections, the repair of the existing road network; - the reconstruction of historical and commercial regions in Anargos, the Paphos Center, around the Square of Theoskapastis, in the area of the old police station; - opening of new parking lots; in Geroskipa; - a decrease in the speed limit in pathos, herooskip, chloraca and embe; - parking control in the municipalities of Paphos and Geroskip; - the construction of new bicycle roads in Emba and Geroskip; - the opening of an archaeological pedestrian route; - opening of intercepting parking lots that will work in the summer months; - the construction of new sidewalks.
