Israel's army chief of staff, General Herchi Halevi, has tendered his resignation, admitting responsibility for the failure to deal with Hamas's incursion into Israeli territory on October 7, 2023.
In his resignation letter, he states that he is requesting termination of his duties on March 6.
He emphasizes that he recognizes his own responsibility, pointing out that he is taking this action at a time when the army is scoring important victories on all fronts and a new hostage release agreement is in place.
The army also announced the resignation of General Yaron Finkelman, in charge of the Gaza Strip, for exactly the same reasons.
Following the announcement of Halevi's resignation, Israeli opposition parties called on Netanyahu and his three-party far-right government to resign.
The leader of the National Unity Party, Benny Gantz, called on Netanyahu to set up a commission of inquiry into the October 7 attack and lead the state to elections to form a government that will regain the trust of the citizens.
