A new Erasmus+ initiative, the EMPOWER project (Empowering Teachers for Science Learning through Modelling-Based Approaches), aims to transform the teaching and learning of Science Education across Europe by equipping teachers with innovative tools and strategies grounded in modelling-based learning approaches.
This paedagogical approach, whose effectiveness has been well documented since the early 2000s, actively engages students in authentic scientific practices by emphasising the construction, use and evaluation of representations of natural phenomena (models). In doing so, it contributes significantly to the development of scientific literacy and deeper conceptual understanding.
The EMPOWER project brings together leading researchers and educators from Germany, Cyprus, the Netherlands and Spain with the goal of developing a robust, research-informed framework for integrating modelling-based approaches into science teaching.
Through collaborative processes and close cooperation with practicing teachers across participating countries, the project will develop modular professional development programmes, digital resources, and teaching materials that promote inclusive and inquiry-based learning environments.
