Representatives of the Kritou Terra community have submitted an application to improve the area near the Kremmiotis waterfall near their village. However, the Department of the Environment rejected this request.
The statement from local residents listed: – the construction of a parking lot with 103 spaces, – the construction of protective fences with an area of 400 square meters and a kiosk for visitors to the waterfall.
Representatives of Kritu Terra explained that the waterfall is visited by 80,000 people annually.
Photo: "Herald of Cyprus"The Department of the Environment rejected this application. The work would take place on a site with a total area of 7358 square meters. m, 83% of which is located in an agricultural zone, and 14% in a protected natural area.
In addition, this site is directly adjacent to the special protected natural area of the Agias Ekaterinis – Agias Paraskevis gorge. It is included in the European Natura 2000 network.
The area of the Agias Ekaterinis Gorge - Agias Paraskevis and the villages of Kritou Terra presents a rich and varied landscape: rocks, streams, bushes and trees. This area attracts migratory birds, which nest here in large numbers. With the exception of agriculture, there are no other anthropogenic activities in these areas.
The waterfall is located 500 meters northeast of the proposed parking area, the village of Kritou Terra is 470 meters south.
Currently, lovers of nature and beautiful places still come to the waterfall. There is an unpaved road and a small vacant lot that serves as a parking lot. There are trails leading to the falls, and there are picnic tables halfway to the main Kremmiotis Falls.
