The Cyprus Addiction Authority (AAEK) warns of dangerous products available on the Cypriot market as "cannabis" or "legal cannabis products", which are not necessarily of natural origin, after relevant checks.
As it states in its announcement, in several cases these products contain synthetic cannabinoids such as MDMB-BUTINACA, MDMB-4en-PINACA, 4F-MDMB-BUTINACA, HHC, THC-P, etc.
Of particular concern, he says, is the fact that these substances have been found in various forms, such as resin, impregnated paper, oils, edible products (jelly, cookies), which increases the risk of unintended or uncontrolled use, especially among young people or vulnerable groups.
The Authority suggests vigilance of all treatment structures, hospitals, TAE and emergency units for possible cases. He notes that these substances are much more powerful than THC (the main active ingredient in cannabis) and can cause severe poisoning, psychotic episodes, sudden death, even after taking a very small amount.
It also states that there may be an association with the use of such substances, particularly when severe tachycardia, confusion, psychosis or fainting are observed after use.
He also recommends paying close attention to products labeled “legal cannabis” or “CBD,” as they may contain highly toxic synthetic compounds.
The Authority also recommends avoiding the purchase or consumption of products of unknown origin or without clear and complete labeling of ingredients, as well as strengthening information and awareness of the public, especially young people, regarding the serious risks of poisoning or death after using products that appear as cannabis but contain dangerous synthetic substances.
He notes, finally, that listing indications such as “legal cannabis,” “CBD” or “herbal product” does not ensure that the product is safe.
