Residents of villages in the Larnaca region will face interruptions in the supply of drinking water. The reason was work to repair the central water supply. Which villages will be affected?
The disruption will continue until approximately 5 pm on October 31 in Vavla and Laia (Larnaca region). In a statement, the regional administration said: “The reduced supply of drinking water is due to the fact that the Department of Water Resources Development urgently shut off the central water supply that supplies water to both villages to combat the leakage.” Consumers are encouraged to use water sparingly.
As of October 30, the island's reservoirs were 11.1% full.
Based on available profile estimates from the Water Resources Development Department, the areas of the Republic of Cyprus under government control require on average about 770,000 cubic meters of water per day. Of this, cities account for approximately 336,000 cubic meters per day, and agriculture accounts for an average of 440,000 cubic meters per day. At the same time, the seasonal load is uneven: during the peak summer season, the total daily demand often jumps to 1–1.2 million cubic meters per day due to irrigation and tourism, and in winter it drops to approximately 400–500 thousand cubic meters per day.
Here is what the Larnaca Water Supply Department recommends for more economical use of water:
– Check your home plumbing and plumbing regularly to promptly diagnose any problems. If a leak is detected, take the necessary measures to eliminate it.
– Fix dripping faucets promptly. A faulty faucet, even if a drop of water flows out of it, can lead to the loss of several tons of liquid.
– Use new systems and devices to save water.
– Give preference to a shower instead of a bath, but at the same time do not let water flow away aimlessly, for example, while you are soaping your hair. If there is a need to drain cold water, then you need to collect it in a bucket for further use.
– Do not allow children to play with water in the bathtub, yard or anywhere else.
– Cover the water while brushing your teeth or shaving, and generally try to use a minimal amount of water in a separate glass for this procedure.
– Only turn on the dishwasher or washing machine when it is fully loaded, and always select the most economical programs.
– Wash vegetables and fruits in a basin, and use the remaining water to water flowers.
– Water the flowers with a sprayer early in the morning or late in the evening, when moisture evaporates more slowly.
– Use a bucket and sponge to wash your car, not a hose.
– Avoid using a hose to wash your veranda, loggia, balcony or other outdoor spaces, as this is illegal and will result in a fine. To keep your loggia, balcony or veranda clean, use a brush and mop.
– Notify local authorities if you notice water leaks in public places.
