"This decision is yet another targeted intervention to deal with water scarcity, in practice supporting the EOAs and communities responsible for managing local water supply networks," he said.
At the same time, Mrs Panagiotou continued, the annual provision of € 1 million for the three-year period 2025-2027 was approved, in order to implement similar projects in communities outside the competence of the EOAs, enhancing water supply even in the most remote areas.
The Minister of Agriculture also said that in the context of emergency measures to tackle water scarcity, the Council of Ministers approved a proposal by the Ministry of Agriculture for a sponsorship plan to install small private desalination units in hotel units, with the aim of meeting their needs in water without water supply. The total amount of reinforcement of the project, which will be valid for two years, is, according to Mrs Panagiotou, to € 3 million.
"Another very important decision made today is the highly simplified licensing framework for small desalination units of up to 1,500 cubic feet," he said, adding that the simplification of procedures covers hotels, local authorities and farmers, who wish to install small desalination units.
"Therefore, I appeal to the local authorities, who wish to place small desalination units, to contact the ministry, so that we can proceed with their own funding," Ms Panagiotou said. He added that on the basis of new procedures, the licensing and approval of the funding will be completed within a week.
"As a government, we are investing in solutions with a measurable footprint, supporting local infrastructure and enhancing our collective effort to sustainable and sufficient water management in a period of increased pressures due to the climate crisis," he said.
The Minister of Agriculture noted that the new decisions made today are coming to add two very important actions approved by the Council of Ministers, the National Investment Plan of Water Projects with a total investment beyond 1.2 billion euros and the 28 -billion 28 -year -old program.
