Cyprus has sixth-highest proportion of Ukrainian refugees in EU

Cyprus has taken in the sixth-highest proportion of Ukrainian refugees of any European Union member state, according to figures released by the EU’s statistical service, Eurostat.

In total, there are 23,090 non-EU citizens who fled Ukraine living in Cyprus, which corresponds to a rate of 23.9 per 1,000 people overall.

This figure is only bettered by the Czech Republic, Poland, Latvia, Slovakia, and Estonia, with the Czech Republic’s rate the highest in the bloc at 33.5.

At the other end of the scale, France has taken in just 0.8 people per 1,000, while Sweden has taken in 2.6 per 1,000, Italy has taken in 2.8 per 1,000, and Greece has taken in 3.2 per 1,000.

Cyprus’ small overall size and population means that it has taken in the fourth-smallest proportion of the total number of refugees from Ukraine in Europe, with 0.5 per cent of them residing in Cyprus.

Smaller proportions are only found in Slovenia, Luxembourg, and Malta, while the proportions in Germany and Poland dwarf those of the rest of the EU.

Exactly 27.8 per cent of all refugees from Ukraine in the EU are currently residing in Germany, while 23.4 per cent are residing in Poland. The Czech Republic is in a distant third place, with 8.6 per cent.
