Gymnasium students will begin their studies on September 6. The Ministry of Education issued a circular outlining planned innovations for secondary schools. There will be a lot of them.
Here are the changes you can expect:
– Updated training programs in all subjects. The emphasis was on systematizing and reducing the amount of material covered so that students had a digestible and sufficient amount of knowledge and better developed their skills and abilities.
– Introduction of a system for assessing the quality of education at the school level. A range of actions in schools will enable the quality of teaching to be regularly assessed with a view to continuously improving the performance of teachers and staff.
– New system for assessing student performance. Students will be assessed not only by exam results. Performance assessment will become part of daily work and learning processes, and emphasis will be placed on a variety of assessment methods.
– Expand full-day interdisciplinary schools. The following full-day schools have already started operating in Cyprus: Pankyprio in Nicosia, Lanitio in Limassol, Evryviadio in Larnaca, Paralimni in Ammochostos and Nikolaidio in Paphos. These schools will be joined by Archangelou Gymnasium in Nicosia and Ipsonas in Limassol. The afternoon program is not a continuation of the morning one, but represents additional classes in two areas - STEM and Greek language and culture.
– Train teachers to identify students' emotional difficulties early, to prevent bullying in schools, and to help students make the transition from elementary to middle school.
– Collection and digitization of materials for the electronic archive of the history of education in Cyprus.
– Launch of a pilot program for teaching German in selected schools in the afternoon.
– Introduction of a financial literacy lesson in the third grade of gymnasiums.
– Improving the level of Greek proficiency among high school students. In Greek lessons and in the teaching of other subjects, attention will be paid to expanding vocabulary and mastering a higher level of proficiency in Greek, organizing competitions and seminars among students.
– Expanding the capabilities of the eDEA electronic control system. The pilot program for launching an electronic learning management system in three schools was successful. It is expected that it will be gradually introduced in all grades of schools.
– Launch of the Aristotelis CyFIT program to assess the physical health of students and prevent the development of obesity and other health problems.
