Cyclone Coral carries frost and snowfalls to Cyprus

Cyclone Coral carries frost and snowfalls to Cyprus

From February 20, the island will cover a rare cooling for the region. The cyclone will bring the north wind, snowfalls and frosts, and the temperature in certain areas will drop below 12 degrees.

Cyprus is waiting for a cooling from February 20, just on a cyclopempti - the first day of carnival celebrations. Cyclone Coral directs cold air from Siberia to the island. The north wind, rains and snow in mountainous and foothill areas are expected for seven days.

At the peak of bad weather, the meteorological service predicts snowfalls at an altitude of 300 meters above sea level, which is extremely rare for Cyprus. In the afternoon, minus temperatures are expected in mountainous areas, and in Nicosia and on the coast the thermometer can sink to zero.

On February 20, residents are waiting for 14-16 degrees within the country, 16-18-on the coast and 1-in the mountains.

On February 21, the thermometer column will drop about five degrees below the norm for the season, that is, up to 10-12 degrees within the country, 12-14 on the coast, -3 high in the mountains.

The peak of bad weather will fall on the weekend, when even in low -mountain areas, an increase in clouds, rains, thunderstorms and snowfalls predict. The temperature will be 8-12 degrees below normal. Strong frosts are expected in the mountains.

Inside the island on the night of February 23 to 24, negative temperatures are not excluded. During the day, the air will not warm up more than 10 degrees. Similar weather conditions will prevail in coastal areas: the temperature will fluctuate in the area of zero. Unfortunately, this means the death of a large part of the crops on the plantations of Kokkinochoria.

From February 24, the cyclone will gradually begin to retreat, and by the middle of next week the temperature will return to normal.

The name Coral Cyclone was given by a team of meteorologists of Cyprus, Greece and Israel, which appropriate the names of weather phenomena in the Eastern Mediterranean. Record low temperatures are also predicted in Israel.
