On August 17, the Limassol Municipality received information from the company VSS-EPE/VTS, which monitors the purity of sea water in the city, about the deterioration of water quality off the city’s coast.
Other previously submitted complaints were also reviewed, and the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research was informed about the case.
Only recently, on August 10, employees of the Sub-Ministry of Shipping and the Limassol Municipality carried out an inspection of the coast and checked the condition of the drainpipes. As a result, no sources of contamination were identified. The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research installed an absorption barrier to filter water in the area of contamination.
On the morning of August 19, a leak was discovered from the central drainage well on 28 October Street on the city embankment. At 10:10, municipal employees immediately began to eliminate it, and by 11:00 the work was completed.
Earlier, the Limassol municipality also reported that it was concerned about the frequent cases of seawater pollution, the causes of which lie in the operation of large ships and other activities on the high seas.
It was again proposed to create a single executive body that would monitor order at sea. At the moment, different services and departments are fragmented and are responsible only for their area of responsibility regarding the sea and environmental pollution. The Limassol Municipality hopes that it will be possible to coordinate the work of all these services for a faster response.
