The Council of Ministers approved on Wednesday a proposal by the Ministry of Health regarding the improvement and simplification of the procedures for covering the costs of travel, accommodation and food for patients and their companions, who go abroad for treatment not offered in the public sector.
"With today's decision, patients are greatly facilitated and the time required for the examination and reimbursement of applications is reduced," declared, after the end of the Cabinet meeting, the Minister of Health, Michalis Damianos.
He explained that the process of submitting financial information is simplified, since now only the latest tax return or income certificate will be required.
The obligation to present three offers for air tickets is also abolished, in order to avoid patient inconvenience, especially in emergencies. The Ministry will cover the cost of the economy class ticket, based on the relevant evidence.
He also said that, in cases where proof of residence is not submitted, compensation equal to 18% of the total foreign maintenance allowance will be paid.
The new arrangements will apply to applications submitted from the date of today's decision and will not be retroactive.
"With this decision, the Ministry of Health takes another step to support patients and their families in a more humane and practical way, reducing bureaucracy and offering a faster and more efficient service", concluded the Minister.
