Akrotiri evacuation to remain in place until Friday

Akrotiri municipality will remain under evacuation until Friday, authorities confirmed on Tuesday, with the situation set to be reassessed at the end of the week.

Civil defence teams are continuing to patrol the area and maintain contact with residents who have left their homes, to provide guidance and support.

The interior ministry said residents of Timi, Anarita and Mandria, as well as those in Ormideia, Xylofagou and Xylotymvou, have been proactively informed of temporary shelter points in case evacuation becomes necessary.

Authorities have also been in contact with the community leader of Pyla to keep local residents updated on developments.

Schools in Akrotiri will remain closed for the rest of the week, according to a statement issued by the education ministry.

The closure affects the nursery school, primary school and the Akrotiri Environmental Training Centre, covering all teachers, staff and students.

The measures follow a drone strike on Monday against the British air base at Akrotiri, launched from Lebanon and linked to Iranian-backed forces.

The ministry emphasised that the evacuation and school closures are precautionary and based on ongoing risk assessments.

Messages sent through local authorities are aimed at keeping the public informed and ready to respond to any changes in the security situation.

Authorities urged residents to follow instructions and remain in contact with Civil defence teams to ensure safety during the ongoing alert.
