On Monday, September 8, lawyers representing the interests of the family of the conscript of Tanasis Nikolau, found dead under the bridge in Limassol in 2005, reported threats to murder.
The family of Nikolau previously disputed the initial conclusion on suicide and achieved justice, including through the European Court of Human Rights. During the investigation, four former police officers and forensic expert Panikos Stavrianos were accused of alleged omissions, but the legal service of Cyprus decided that new evidence did not justify criminal prosecution.
After the publication of the report prepared by investigators Savvas Matas and his colleague, lawyers began to receive threats. In the complaint to the police, Matas announced intimidating messages on social networks, presumably from relatives and persons related to the case, as well as a series of soundless phone calls from unknown numbers, including calls from Greece.
One of the messages reported, contained a threatening subtext: “Did you wash your filthy mouth with a rinse before mentioning my brother's name? If not, the next time I advise you to do this ... ".
Nicosia police began an investigation into threats and was taking measures to verify them. The tension increased after the Nikolau family announced plans to initiate criminal cases in private against specific persons participating in the investigation, including former military personnel.
Lawyers continue to study testimonies and other materials in order to clarify evidence that may become the basis for private prosecution. The official bodies, however, emphasized that there were no new evidence justifying criminal prosecution, and the fact of intentional non -fulfillment of official duties cannot be proved.
