On August 21, a tragedy occurred in the Kiti area in the Kiti area in Larnac: 31-year-old Antonis Kurras from Nicosia died during the collapse of a motor-pcaplane that crashed into a rock on the beach of Parasolia.
The circumstances of the incident are investigated by the Cyprus police and the Council for the investigation of aviation accidents and incidents. According to a friend of the deceased, flying nearby on another paraglider, Kurras began to lose his height rapidly, most likely due to the incorrect disclosure of the parachute.
The President of the Council Antonis Antoniu said that the experts have already conducted a preliminary inspection of the paraglider, but additional checks are needed. Among possible reasons, equipment malfunctions and adverse weather conditions are considered. “We are trying to find out the factor that led to the tragedy - it can be both a paragraph problem and the wind,” said Antoniu.
As part of the investigation, the fabric, slings and safety mechanisms of the paraglider will be checked, as well as witnesses. The authorities also find out how the deceased and his friend acquired paraglids and whether they were imported into Cyprus in legal way.
The forensic medical examination conducted in the Nikosiysk City Hospital showed that Kurras died of multiple body injuries and vital organs.
This is the third accident of the paraglider in Cyprus over the past five years. In similar incidents in Nicosia and Larnaca in 2020 and 2021, pilots were injured, but survived. Antoniu emphasized that the flights on paraglider remain a highly risk-free sport that requires strict compliance with safety rules: “If something goes wrong, an accident can happen very quickly.”
