The members of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport requested the registration of the matter for the contract for the Paphos - Polis Chrysochous road today, in order to present the intentions of the Ministry of Transport, Communications, Works for the completion of the project, which remains pending after the cancellation of the contract with contractor company that had undertaken its implementation. As members of the Commission stated in their statements after the meeting, the issue will be discussed next Thursday, November 21.
After the Committee meeting, AKEL Member of Parliament, Valentinos Fakontis, pointed out that the successive cancellations of public works contracts constitute a "serious setback" to the prospects for the development of the economy and the progress of the local society. He also said that many project contracts were signed before the elections and turned out to be "pre-election fireworks". Specifically for the Pafos - Polis Chrysochous road, he said that the termination of the contract will greatly increase the project implementation time and also the final construction cost.
"While the current and former rulers are fighting over who is responsible, at the same time the people are called to pay for what has been broken," said Mr. Fakontis.
"We call on the Audit Service to immediately proceed with the investigation of the wrecks of the public contracts and we also call on those in charge to take their political responsibilities for their inability to carry out major projects, which could take our country and society forward" , he added, blaming the current and previous governments.
He called on the responsible Ministry for a project of such great supra-local importance to immediately proceed with the announcement of the first phase for implementation, noting that "the execution of the work has reached 20%, which is unacceptable, because the project had to be delivered in a few days ». Also, he added, "the second phase and the connection with Mesogi should proceed at the same time, until the road artery of the Paphos - Polys Chrysochous highway is completed".
The Member of Parliament of DIKO, Chrysanthos Savvidis, stated in his statements that the members of the Committee will request the presence of the Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeadis, in order to present the alternative plan for the implementation of the project and expressed the certainty that the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, will keep his word of completing the road in any way.
Mr. Savvidis also said that specific timetables will be requested and expressed the wish that the required time would indeed be three years, as mentioned. He noted that this particular project was started in the wrong way from the beginning and that the authorities had concealed the fact that it would be a two-lane road and not four. "We want a proper road network, as in all areas of Cyprus, from Ayia Napa to Paphos, as well as to Poli Chrysochous," he said.
He also said that all project contracts signed by the previous government are problematic and should be looked into by the Audit Office.
