"The main task of Russia and China is to counter any US attempt to contain them," Sergei Shoigu, Russia's former defense minister, said today during a meeting in Beijing with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
US President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose steep tariffs on exports from China and other countries, raising fears of an escalating trade war. Washington sees Beijing as its biggest competitor and Moscow as the main state that threatens it.
Shoigu, who is now secretary of the Russian Security Council, told Wang that Moscow's close ties with Beijing have a stabilizing influence on the world.
