With the crisis in the Middle East almost 13 months old and the most active front, the one in Lebanon, already in its second month, the American diplomatic delegation that will meet with Benjamin Netanyahu in the next few hours seems to have succeeded in bringing a "political settlement" an important part of the problem.
Sources from the entourage of both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the counterpart of the Minister of Defense, Galland, report that the American plan is currently receiving positive recommendations from the majority of the cabinet, which in itself is a positive development. After all, it is the first time in the 13 months of war between the South and the North that the political leadership of Israel seems willing to follow a path other than that of weapons.
Specifically, tomorrow the Israeli Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with Joe Biden's top two advisers, Amos Hochstein and Brett McGurk, and it seems that the final details will be agreed upon that will enable both the more than 60,000 displaced citizens of the Israeli north and to the hundreds of thousands of southern Lebanon to gradually return to their homes.
The plan is extremely important, because it presupposes an agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, an element that in itself will be structural for the continuation of de-escalation in the south as well. Three different high-ranking sources from the State Department say it is quite likely that this agreement will have the signatures of both sides within the next three weeks.
