On December 12, the Plenary Session of the Parliament will put to a vote the proposals for a law, concerning the operation of the photo-marking system at traffic lights and extrajudicial fines for traffic violations. As DISY Member of Parliament, Fotini Tsiridou, stated in her statements after today's meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, the final texts of the proposed laws will be presented at the meeting of the Committee on November 28, so that they can make their way to the Plenary.
At today's meeting, the law proposals submitted by DISY, AKEL and ELAM were examined separately. The DISY MPs proposed extending the deadline for paying extra-judicial fines to 90 days, before it increases, as well as introducing regulations for cases where the vehicle owner refuses to receive a notification, as well as for the statute of limitations for penalty points after two years have passed. AKEL MPs proposed the installation of a countdown timer where there is a photo-marking system, otherwise suspending the application of the provision of the Law regarding the offense of failure to comply with traffic lights, as well as the repayment of the fine in two to five installments. ELAM proposed the installation of timers at traffic lights and the possibility of repaying the court fee in installments.
Mrs. Tsiridou expressed her satisfaction for the fact that DISY's proposals were positively treated by the Road Safety Council and the Ministry of Justice.
When asked if it would be better to extend the repayment period more, he replied that DISY's proposals were made with the aim of not changing the philosophy of extrajudicial fines. "If we come and change the philosophy, changing so much the amount imposed by the law of any violation, we think that in the end we will tear down the law itself and the price will not have the same value, because after all we want to they are also deterrent prices, but in this way we give convenience to the world, listening to inflation, accuracy, the huge financial problems that the world has to be able to make ends meet, and exactly they think that our proposals correspond to reality ", he said.
Responding to another question about whether there is a possibility of grouping of proposals, he said that DISY will not support other proposals, which may change the philosophy of punishments or be unconstitutional, noting that the proposals for payments in installments, change its philosophy extrajudicial fine.
"Since we give people 90 days to pay the fine, since we give an incentive to reduce it, we don't think that a fine of say €25 should be paid in installments," he said, concluding that "these two proposals that we submitted as DISY also meet the needs of the world, but above all they are within the Constitution".
The Member of Parliament of DIKO, Chrysanthos Savvidis said in his statements that DIKO will support the proposals made, which seem to be accepted by the state.
"All these changes that the members of the Commission are trying to make, are from the point of view of facilities", he added, underlining that the aim is to solve the problems that exist in the operation of the photo-marking system, by adjusting aspects such as the arrow to the right.
