An action plan prepared by the water department to combat drought and water shortages. The Action Program includes 28 targeted activities, of which seven are urgent, eight are medium-term and 13 are long-term.

At the moment, the reservoirs of the Republic of Cyprus, whose maximum capacity is 290.8 million cubic meters, are only 25.3% full (73.6 million cubic meters).
Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou said the plan's objectives are
accelerating the full coverage of water needs by public water supply systems increasing the safety and reliability of water infrastructure by implementing new and upgrading existing water projects increasing food security by ensuring the maximum possible amount of water for irrigation purposes strengthening governance in the water supply and sanitation sector using renewable energy sources in desalination plants
Near- and medium-term measures are aimed at tackling the upcoming water shortage crisis in 2025-26 and should improve the water balance by more than 15 million cubic meters per year, or 15% of the total water supplied by the water department.
Immediate and medium-term measures include, in particular, the following
operating four boreholes for irrigation purposes improving water supply to communities by operating 20 boreholes and renovating or constructing new infrastructure such as reservoirs increasing water production at the Dhekelia desalination plant awareness campaign to reduce household water losses improving irrigation capacity by doubling the budget installing mobile desalination plants reducing losses in water supply networks
